Coca Cola Ham Recipe

Inspired by the recipes of the American Deep South, this baked dish is infused with appetising sweetness from Coca-Cola.

 Ingredients (Serves 10):

  • 2kg/ 4lb smoked cured ham or smoked gammon
  • A handful of whole cloves
  • 1 cup firmly packed (200g/ 7oz) of brown or muscovado sugar
  • 6½ cups (1.5 litres/ 2½ pints) of Coca-Cola Original Taste

 Directions:

  1. Boil the meat for 1 hour, then remove it from the saucepan and let it cool a little so you can remove the skin. Using a sharp knife, score the flesh in a diamond pattern or at intervals all the way through to the meat, then push the whole cloves into the scored areas.
  2. Place the meat in a roasting pan or tin, then coat with one-quarter of the sugar, patting it into place. Pour the Coca-Cola into the pan slowly, pouring some of it over the meat and sugar (some of the sugar will wash off into the pan). Add the remaining sugar patting it around the meat.
  3. Bake in a preheated oven at 475°F (240°C/ Gas Mark 9) for 20 minutes, then reduce the heat to 375°F (190°C/ Gas Mark 5) and cook for a further 1 hour.
  4. Let the meat cool, then remove the cloves and slice to serve. Serve with mashed potatoes and steamed green beans.

  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1-1.5kg/ 2-3lb chicken wings
  • 1 tablespoon of cornflour (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper

 Directions:

  1. Combine the sugar, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, onion, garlic, soy sauce and salt and pepper to taste into a large flameproof casserole dish.
  2. Place the chicken wings in the sauce, turning to coat well. Put the casserole dish into a preheated over at 350°F (180°C/ Gas Mark 4) for 2 hours, until the chicken is fully cooked and the juices run clear when pierced with the tip of a sharp knife or skewer.
  3. If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix the cornflour with the water in a small bowl until smooth with no lumps. Put the casserole dish on the hob over a low heat, stir in the cornflour mixture and simmer for a few minutes until the sauce has thickened.
